Chapter Five: Wherein the Heroes Come Upon Feningrad Together, But Leave It Separated

“It’s hard to believe that you’re a dropout from the legendary Mythical College. I guess that would explain why you take writing so seriously, though. I’ve heard that people who begin a craft there are bound to it for life!”

“I began that craft long before I ever arrived at that phony university, but I don’t believe that staying there made me any better at what I do,” Joshiah the Notetaker confessed. “However, paying them a visit once more opened my eyes to what a terrible situation we’ve fallen into. If my guidance counselor was telling the truth about everything, Tama the Terrible is going to successfully rally the coyotes all the way south to reunite with their hyena allies, and the battle to follow in the middle of the continent will surely decide the fate of Furope for centuries to come.”

“So they really have all kinds of ancient devices and weapons that let you see into the future, and control time, and make people even taller?” Atimist the Strong but Very Small asked.

“I’m afraid there’s nothing at the college to help you with that last one, but there are some implements that allow you to see vague pieces of a future that you can still create. It hasn’t happened yet, so we can’t see what it will be for certain, but we can see the most likely outcome, if we stay on a particular course.”

“And do you have one of those devices?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I…may…have…k-kinda destroyed a massive part of the lawn on my graduation day. Except it wasn’t my graduation day. And my getting Tama expelled is the reason why he’s such an evil bastard.”

“I think we can all agree that this is approximately 95% your fault,” Huscoon confirmed, “But shouldn’t Tama accept some of the blame for this? It’s his own fault that he was involved in that fight in the first place!”

“If you were even a tenth as much of a coyote as I am, you would have a better understanding of why my words were so hurtful. People have been killed for saying far less insulting things.”

Nbowa shrugged. “I don’t think it’s so bad. Honestly, I feel like it’d probably really insult a wolf if they were to join our merry band of adventurers, only to find out that coyotes were still being so oppressive of them.”

“The wolves don’t experience any oppression. They literally never have.”

“Is that why you hate them?”

“I’m one of them!”

“One fourth,” Huscoon corrected. “It’d be like if someone slightly larger than Atimist was a wolf; you’d be about that much wolf.”

“Far be it for me to correct the guy that’s obsessed with numbers and logic, but he is not even close to one fourth my size.”

“When it comes to heart, I’m ten times your size,” Atimist crossed his arms and popped open the Notetaker’s satchel to allow for adequate airflow. “And when it comes to smell, you’re a hybrid, so yours is
